A popular and delicious Italian dish, it is made with layers of Lasagna (wide flat sheets of pasta). The fillings are different with various variations nowadays but, typically it starts with a tomato sauce base, followed by a layer of lasagna, then filled with noodles/ meat/ vegetables and cheese in white sauce. A lasagna layer again, then filling in tomato-based (red ) sauce followed by a sheet and then some more vegetables/meat in white sauce. The number of layers is optional. The topmost layer has grated cheese which when baked in the oven turns into a lovely, crispy, golden-brown crust full of the flavour of exotic herbs and spices used like garlic, basil and oregano.
